Time of Flight Sensors in Robotics: Where Speed Beats Precision

Not every vision problem in robotics is a precision problem. Some are speed problems.
When a part is moving down a conveyor at production pace, the robot has a narrow window to identify it, calculate a grasp point, and pick it cleanly. A vision system that produces a beautiful, highly accurate point cloud half a second after the part has already passed the pick zone is useless regardless of its depth resolution. What matters is how fast the depth data arrives, and whether the robot can act on it in time.
This is the specific problem time of flight was built to solve. It is not the right sensor for every robotics application, but for the situations where real-time continuous depth is the deciding factor, nothing competes with it on the metrics that actually matter.
What Makes Time of Flight Different in Practice
Time of flight sensors measure distance by emitting pulses of near-infrared light and calculating how long each pulse takes to return from the objects in the scene. The sensor does this for every pixel simultaneously, producing a complete depth frame in a single exposure.
That single-exposure architecture is what makes time of flight fast. There is no sequential pattern projection, no waiting for multiple images to be captured and compared. The sensor fires, the scene reflects, the depth map arrives. Modern industrial time of flight cameras deliver 30 to 75 depth frames per second continuously, which means the robot's controller is receiving updated spatial information faster than a human eye can track.
The other practical advantage is lighting independence. Time of flight sensors bring their own near-infrared illumination, so production floor lighting conditions do not affect depth quality. Variable ambient light, shadows, overhead fixtures cycling on and off: none of it disrupts the sensor's output the way it disrupts passive vision systems that depend on ambient light to function.
The Three Robotics Problems Time of Flight Solves Best
Picking from moving conveyors. A cobot arm tracking parts on a conveyor needs continuous, real-time position updates, not a snapshot taken at the start of each pick cycle. Time of flight streams depth data fast enough that the robot's controller can calculate where a part will be when the arm arrives, not just where it was when the camera last fired. For logistics operations, e-commerce fulfillment, and food and beverage lines running at production speed, this is the capability that makes conveyor-based robotic picking viable without stopping the line.
Collaborative human-robot workspaces. When a person shares a workspace with a cobot, the robot needs to detect that person's position and respond in real time, not on a fixed scan interval. Time of flight sensors monitoring the workspace perimeter can stream depth data continuously, allowing the robot's safety system to track human proximity dynamically and respond with speed reduction or a full stop before contact occurs. This is a materially different safety architecture than relying on pre-programmed exclusion zones that only work when humans stay where they are supposed to.
High-mix bin picking at production pace. Structured light produces excellent point clouds but requires the scene to be still during capture. In a high-throughput bin picking cell where cycle time is measured in seconds, the extra latency of a structured light capture cycle adds up. Time of flight handles bins with moving or settling contents, captures depth in a single frame, and keeps pace with the cycle time demands of a production line that cannot wait for the camera.
Where Time of Flight Has Limits
Time of flight is not the right choice for every robotics vision application, and being specific about this is more useful than pretending it is universal.
For precision inspection tasks measuring surface geometry to sub-millimeter tolerances, structured light will produce more accurate point clouds. Time of flight trades some depth precision for speed, and that trade-off matters when the application is dimensional metrology rather than pick-and-place.
Highly reflective or transparent surfaces can cause measurement errors in time of flight systems because the near-infrared illumination does not return cleanly from those materials. Shiny metal parts, clear plastic containers, and glass present challenges that structured light handles better in many configurations.
For applications where parts are stationary, well-lit, and the primary requirement is maximum point cloud density rather than frame rate, time of flight may be more sensor than the task requires at its price point.
