3D Cameras for Robotics: A Practical Guide

A robotic arm without a vision system is a precise machine that can only do what it has been explicitly told, moving to coordinates that never change. Add a 3D camera, and something different happens: the robot can see the world, adapt to variation, and make decisions in real time.


This is the shift from hard automation to smart automation, and it is now accessible to small and mid-size manufacturers at a price point most people do not expect. A capable cobot arm starts at $3,500. The 3D vision systems that bring them to life have followed a similar affordability curve.


Why 2D Vision Falls Short


A standard 2D camera sees what a photograph captures: shape, color, and contrast, with no depth information. For a robot arm, that missing dimension is everything.


If every part sits in exactly the same position every time, a 2D camera can work. But real production environments are messier. Parts come in mixed orientations. Bins empty at different rates. Products vary slightly in size. A 2D camera offers the robot no useful depth data to work with, so the robot either misses the part, jams, or requires constant operator intervention.


3D cameras solve this by adding depth. With a full point cloud mapping every visible surface in three-dimensional space, a robot arm can identify an object's precise position and orientation, calculate the best grasp angle, and pick reliably from a jumbled bin on the first try.


The Three Core 3D Camera Technologies


Structured Light


Structured light cameras project a known pattern (typically a grid or dot array) onto the scene. A camera captures how that pattern deforms as it hits object surfaces, and depth is calculated from those distortions through triangulation.

The results are excellent: high-density point clouds with millimeter-level accuracy. Structured light is the preferred choice for inspection, assembly, and precision pick-and-place tasks where dimensional accuracy matters most. The trade-off is that highly reflective or transparent surfaces can distort the projected pattern, and capturing moving objects is difficult since the system takes multiple sequential images.


Time-of-Flight (ToF)


ToF cameras emit near-infrared light pulses and measure how long they take to bounce back from objects in the scene. Distance is calculated from that travel time, producing a real-time depth map frame by frame, at speeds up to 75 frames per second.


Because ToF cameras bring their own light source, they perform reliably in dim or variable lighting, a key advantage in warehouse and factory settings. They are well suited to pick and place on moving conveyors, AMR navigation, and any application where cycle speed matters more than extreme precision. Highly reflective or very dark surfaces can introduce measurement errors.


Stereo Vision


Stereo vision mimics human binocular depth perception. Two cameras positioned a fixed distance apart capture the same scene from slightly different angles, and the disparity between the two images is processed to calculate depth.

The appeal is cost. Stereo systems can be built from standard camera hardware, making entry costs lower than the other two technologies. They also work passively under ambient light, making them viable outdoors. The limitation: they require adequate texture in the scene and struggle in low-light environments without supplemental illumination.


Eye-in-Hand vs. Eye-to-Hand


Where you mount the camera matters as much as which camera you choose.

Eye-in-hand mounts the camera directly on the robot's end-effector so it moves with the arm, giving a close-up view of the object just before grasping. Eye-to-hand mounts the camera on a fixed stand above the workspace, allowing the robot to calculate object positions before the arm moves at all. For most pick-and-place setups, eye-to-hand is the practical starting point.
